Modern life appears to move in two opposite directions at once. On the one hand, digital technology, global trade, and complex institutions make people more dependent on one another than ever before. On the other hand, many individuals now enjoy forms of personal freedom that earlier generations could hardly imagine. In my view, people have become more independent in their daily choices, but more dependent in the systems that sustain those choices.
